In humans, the gestation period lasts for around 39 weeks or roughly nine months. These months can be challenging, both physically and mentally for the parents. Special care needs to be taken to ensure a healthy environment that can nurture the mother as well as the child.

The whole period of pregnancy can be divided into three parts, or trimesters consisting of three months each. Each trimester has distinct characteristics associated with the development of the baby. Apart from ensuring general well being, specific care needs to be taken during each of the three trimesters.
The first three months of pregnancy, also called the first trimester is a period where you have to be particularly careful. This is more so because almost three fourths of miscarriages occur during this period. Although most of these are a result of natural causes not yet known to us, there can be means of preventing them. Miscarriages can also  lead to severe loss of blood. Despite being a common occurrence, it can leave long lasting impacts in extreme cases.
For first time mothers, this period is crucial. Often, there can be complications that are not fully understood. Further, the inexperience could lead to the situation spiralling out of control.
Some Common Problems in the First Three Months of Pregnancy

Morning-Sickness

Morning Sickness is common during first trimester of pregnancy

  • The first trimester is the time when first signs of discomfort begin to arise. Conditions such as morning sickness and signs of fatigue are among the most common of these.
  • Constipation – The regular bowel movement may be disrupted as the abdomen has to readjust to prepare for the baby. While doing so, the regular intestinal movement may be affected. So, constipation like conditions can be common.
  • Anxiety and lack of sleep – As the body adapts itself to accommodate a new entity, there are chances that the brain may have to bear a portion of the brunt itself. The reaction may manifest in the form of sleeplessness or anxiety.
  • Bleeding – This is common. But many a time, it can indicate serious problems. It is best to consult a doctor immediately.

The problems mentioned above occur in almost every case of pregnancy. You would be well prepared by learning to expect them. The first trimester is also the time when the first scheduled visit to the gynaecologist needs to be taken.
Apart from paying attention to the basic requirements of the expectant mother, other socio environmental factors play an important role during the initial phases of pregnancy. It can be taken for granted that healthy food and habits would help a great deal in preparing for the weeks ahead. The first few months usually set the tone for the remaining phases of pregnancy and it is always advisable to begin well.
