We all, including babies, constantly experience stimuli in our day-to-day lives. When a baby receives more stimulation than what they can handle or process, they become overstimulated.
Overstimulation in babies can happen as early as just 2 weeks of age. It is quite common among babies between 2 weeks to 4 months of age. This does not mean older children do not experience overstimulation.
When your baby receives too many stimuli, they can have trouble processing it. This can show in multiple ways.
Babies cry more than usual and louder than usual. You will know instantly this is not their usual cry.
They might withdraw their hands or themselves and turn away from others to avoid them. They take the time to process things on their own.
They may want to nurse more held more, or just cuddle with you. The pressure of your touch and hug can calm them down.
When they don’t know how to process all the feelings, they will yell, scream, cry, clench their fists, throw things and just fling their legs and arms in different directions.
They may just want to nap at an odd hour or resort to self-soothing techniques like sucking their thumb, playing on their own, humming, or playing by themselves.
