The Giving Tree Story With Moral For Kids

Many of us take nature for granted and keep taking from it, without giving anything back. Sometimes the people around us are no different. We tend to take from those who are ready to give, without worrying about the consequences. The Giving Tree Story for kids is a story about a tree who is ready to keep giving and a boy who keeps taking until there is nothing left.

We can teach children many important lessons without having to explain them in detail, in the form of stories. Through a good story, not only can we get the message across but it’s easier for the children to remember too. We can always refer back to the story and give children an example when the situation requires it.

The Giving Tree

Once upon a time, there was an apple tree that was very fond of a young boy who used to play by its side every day. The boy used to climb the tree, tell stories of his day, hang upside down from the branches, and watch the sunset.

When he grew a little older, the tree gave him its leaves to make crows to play with. As the boy got older, he had no time to visit or play with the tree. The tree grew sad and missed him dearly.

After a few years, the boy went back to the tree. He wanted to earn money but did not know how to. The tree suggests he sell its apples and earn money from it. The boy, now a young man, readily removed all the apples from the tree.

Again, the boy became busy and did not visit the tree for a while. After a few years, the boy, now a grown man, was back. This time he wanted to build a house for his family as he was expecting a baby.

The tree asked the man to take its branches to build a house. The man cut all the branches and took them away happily. Now, the tree had no branches and could not sway or rustle its leaves. However, the tree was very happy to help the little boy.

After a few years, the boy came to see the tree again.  This time he wanted to build a boat to sail across the seas and start life afresh. The tree, without hesitation, asked the boy to take its trunk to build a nice boat. The boy cut away the trunk, leaving just a stump behind. The tree felt very happy to help the boy.

After years of sailing across the seas, the boy, now an old man, came to visit the tree. The tree told him it had nothing more to give. The old man smiled at the tree and said he was too old and all he wanted was a peaceful place to rest. The tree asked him to sit by its stump and lean on it.

The tree was very happy to see the boy so happy and peaceful. It felt happy, it could still give the boy something, even in its final stages. Both of them sat and watched the sun set just like the old days.

How Can Children Apply the Lesson of the Story in Their Real Life?

Children can learn to love unconditionally. They can learn to give and help without expecting anything in return. Kids will also learn that if they keep taking everything like the boy, they will eventually have nothing left. They can learn not to over-exploit someone for their unconditional love for us.

This story teaches children about the art of taking and giving responsibly. Just because someone is giving out of love, we cannot keep taking until there is nothing left. Everyone has a limit when it comes to giving. The Giving Tree story teaches this important message very nicely.
