The story of the ant and the grasshopper is a classic tale from the famous Aesop’s Fables. It has multiple versions in different languages with minor differences from version to version. Some musical and ballet shows are based on adaptations of this story.

On a warm sunny day, a grasshopper lay in the sun, relaxing and enjoying the summer. The grasshopper spent his days singing and playing music on his fiddle.

In the meantime, an ant was scurrying up and down, carrying grains. The grasshopper called the ant and asked him what he was up to. The ant, without stopping, replied “ Sorry, can’t stop. Am busy gathering food for the winter”.

The grasshopper laughed at this and asked the ant to relax and come for a chat. He told the ant it is still summer and they have a long way to go for winter. The ant does not stop and continues to gather and store the food safely.

The grasshopper watched the ant working tirelessly, every day while he continued to sing and just enjoy the weather without any worry. He felt the ant was worrying unnecessarily as winter was far away and there was no shortage of food. He also felt the ant was not having fun or enjoying the sunny days like him.

When winter arrived, the weather became cold and dry. There was no food around and the grasshopper was unable to find anything decent to eat. He got hungry and weak by the day searching for food in the cold weather.

One fine day, the grasshopper, out of desperation, knocks on the ant’s door, asking for some food. He sees a huge pile of grains stocked behind the ant’s door and asks him to spare some food.

The ant refused to share, telling the grasshopper was playing music, singing songs, and mocking the ant for collecting food. He told the grasshopper to see himself through the cold winter, as it is nothing to worry about according to the grasshopper himself.

Disappointed and having nowhere to go, the grasshopper leaves the ant’s house to search for some food. The grasshopper scrapes through the cold winter with the little food he can find. He realizes his mistake and understands the urgency behind the ant’s continuous work during summer.

The moral of the story is – you need to work hard today to enjoy tomorrow. You need to make hay when the sun shines and not waste it on just making merry. It is also important to be productive to enjoy a carefree tomorrow. One should not procrastinate as it can cost them dearly in the future.

Children tend to be carefree and not worry about the future. It is their nature, as parents are always there to look after them and plan for them. Children, through this story, can learn to not just have fun playing and wasting their time. They can learn the importance of planning for the future.

The story tells the children that like the ant, it is important to think of the future and put in some regular work toward it. They can also learn that time will not wait for them and they will be the ones to lose if they waste their precious time making merry, like the grasshopper. Children can learn to not delay important work as time will keep moving and won’t wait for them.
